Rear-wheel drive

The engine’s power is transferred through the transmission to the rear axle. Example Vehicles: Passenger cars like the Ford Crown Victoria and Mustang, Mercury Grand Marquis, Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro, Pontiac Firebird. Light-duty Trucks like the Ford F-Series 2WD, Chevrolet Silverado 2WD, Dodge Ram Pickup 2WD, etc

Front-wheel drive

The engine’s power is transferred through the transaxle to the front wheels. Example Vehicles: Passenger cars like the Ford Taurus and Focus, Mercury Sable, Chevrolet Malibu and Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire.

Four-wheel drive

The engine’s power is transferred through the transmission to the transfer case, then to the rear axle. When the transfer case in engaged into 4WD, power also flows to the front axle. Example Vehicles: Primarily Rear-wheel drive vehicles like Light-duty Trucks like the Ford F-Series 4WD, Chevrolet Silverado 4WD, Dodge Ram Pickup 4WD, Durango, Toyota 4-Runner, etc.

All-wheel drive

The engine’s power is transferred through the transmission to the transfer case, then to the front and rear axles at all times. Example Vehicles: Primarily Rear-wheel drive vehicles like Light-duty Trucks and SUV’s like the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, etc.

Crossover four-wheel drive

The engine’s power is transferred through the transaxle to the power transfer unit and the front wheels. When engaged, the transfer unit transfers power to the rear axle. Example Vehicles: Small crossover SUV’s which are primarily front-wheel drive vehicles like the Ford Escape, Buick Rendezvous Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Montana, Aztec, and Vibe, Dodge Caravan, Toyota RAV4, Matrix, and Highlander, Nissan Murano, Honda CR-V and Element, etc.

Crossover all-wheel drive

The engine’s power is transferred through the transaxle to the power transfer unit and the front wheels. The transfer unit transfers power to the rear axle. Example Vehicles: Small crossover SUV’s which are primarily front-wheel drive vehicles like the Ford Escape, Buick Rendezvous Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Montana, Aztec, and Vibe, Dodge Caravan, Toyota RAV4, Matrix, and Highlander, Nissan Murano, Honda CR-V and Element, etc.

HUMMER H1 Powertrain.

Power is transferred through the transmission to the transfer case, then to the rear axle. When the transfer case in engaged into 4WD, power also flows to the front axle. As the power is transferred to all of the wheels, it goes through geared hubs at each wheel.
