Ford MAF cleaning

To have the best performance and efficiency, the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor should be cleaned periodically, with frequency depending on driving conditions. Accessing the MAF is quite easy, and requires the same procedure as changing the air filter. Simply remove the clip that binds the MAF housing to the air filter housing, and then either remove the clamp that holds the MAF housing to the intake or bend the intake upwards for access.
In the top, there will be a small round opening with 2 small wires inside (See picture below). These are the heated wires that tell the computer how much air is entering the engine. They need to be clean to work properly. The wires should look silver in color. If they are black, they are coated with dirt or oil and need to be cleaned. Even if they are not, cleaning them usually results in a small gain in gas mileage. Cleaning them is easy with a can of CRC electronic connections cleaner, or some stores will even carry a cleaner specifically for MAF sensors (though it’s really the same thing). Simply hold the spray nozzle close to the opening and give it a good spray for a couple seconds. Never touch the wires! They are very fragile and will break. Using CRC electronic connection cleaner is recommended because it leaves 0 residue. However if that is not available, a carb cleaner can be used, but make sure to spray it down with brake parts cleaner afterwords so that all the residue is removed.
