The following procedure was performed on a 1999 Daewoo Legasa, and describes how to replace the power steering return line that runs from the steering rack to the power steering reservoir. The power steering line runs beneath the transmission and can be prone to damage from hitting objects while driving or incorrectly removing the transmission. The part is rare and hard to find new, so usually a salvage yard is the best place to acquire a new one. Since this is the return line, and does not contain much pressure, replacement with a used line is ok. A custom made solution can also be used by cutting the metal tube by the fitting and running a regular hose with the use of hose clamps all the way to the reservoir.
Procedure
- Jack the vehicle up and place it on jack stands. Initiate the parking brake and make sure it’s secure.
- Locate the place where the line connects on the rack. This is done by looking beneath the hood from the driver fender side. It will be the line running beneath the transmission, closest to the firewall on the power steering rack.
- Loosen the connection with an 18mm wrench. Once it is loosened, pull the line out.
- Go beneath the vehicle and locate the fasteners that secure the line. Use a short phillipps screw driver to remove the screw on the mount closer to the front of the car.
- The fastener that is between the crossmember and transmission is not very important and difficult to remove without a special curved screwdriver. Place a flathead screw driver against the bottom of the line, and apply some force with the hammer to cut the clamp, with a chiseling action. This can be done carefully without causing any damage to the line
- Use vise grips to remove the factory hose clamp that connects the line to the power steering reservoir.
- Remove the 10mm bolts by the bottom of the radiator that secure the line to the radiator support.
- Pull the power steering line out from between the A/C lines.
- Proceed to pull the entire line out of the vehicle.
- Install the replacement line in reverse dirrections.
