Ford ZX2 chips & tuning software
Jump to: navigation, search

The "chip" comes in 2 programming types (standard and custom) and 2 form factors (chip and flasher).

Standard Programs

A standard program is created by the manufacturer to increase power, MPG, and sometimes raises the speed governor. This type of program cannot be modified from its original. Standard program chips are therefore cheaper.

Custom Programs

A custom chip can be programmed with customized parameters to deal with special modifications (nitrous, turbo, etc.). They normally have multiple banks to hold different programs which can be switched on the fly. These chips are normally programmed while the car is on a dyno.

Chips

Chips are just that, a chip, usually encased in a metal box, that plugs into the back of the ECU. Chips come in either the standard or custom programming types. They must be removed from the ECU everytime they need reprogrammed.

Flashers

Flashers are handheld units which use the memory in the ECU to hold the new program. The usually store more than one program (including the stock code), and have extra features, like OBDII diagnostic codes and datalogging. Because of the ease of use and extra gooodies, these are usually the most expensive.

Options for the ZX2

SuperChips superchips.com

Superchips makes the Blue Superchip. They offer standard, non-customizable programs that increase power, mpg, etc. There is no need to send out the ECU, but you do need to have the proper code on the chip for it to work with your application. You can buy a used chip and get it reflashed to your code, but you need to find a dealer capable of doing it (search for a dealer on Superchips website). You shouldn't pay more than $50 for the chip if it needs reprogrammed, reflashing costs aroun $50-$70, depending on the dealer.

DiabloSport diablosport

DiabloSport makes chips similar to Superchips (standard non-customizable programs). Their chips can hold more than one program (different octane settings, etc.) that can be change with the turn of a switch. Diablo also makes a chip that can be custom programmed, allowing dyno tuning.. Again, you can buy a used chip, but it would need reflashing if not the proper code. Same pricing applies for the standard chip ($50 + $50-$70 flash). You should be able to find a custom chip for around $100-$150. Custom tuning (hourly) varies and starts at about $100/hr (typically 1-2 hours).

SCT (Superchips Custom Tuning) sctflash.com

SCT is the most prefered product for the ZX2. They make custom programable chips that plug into the back of the ECU, but more importantly, they offer a handheld flasher version (XCalibrator 2). The X-2 programs the ECU by changing the program right on the ECU. The X-2 not only eliminates the need to plug a chip in the back of the ECU, the unit doubles as an ODBII scanner, allowing clearing of trouble codes. It also allows custom tuning and the ability to store 4 programs. Same story on the used chip, any gas engine SCT chip or X-2 will work, but will need reprogrammed. SCT chips can normally be found on ebay (got mine for $100). The X-2s are always available (around $300 new). Like the custom Diablo chip, tuning varies at the same rate and time. SCT also carries a Pro Racer package, which includes software to allow you to program your own chip. The price is salty (around $800), but perfect for the hard core tuner.
