Ford Escort speaker replacement

After some time the stock speakers in your car will begin to degrade. Much of the time this is caused by the foam surround drying out and crumbling. To replace the speakers, first you must know what it is that you want to replace them with. In the second generation sedans, all four speakers are 6.5" round speakers. I chose some Sonys from Walmart, and for only $100 a set (front and rear) they sound good, even without subs. There will be some wiring work done but it is simple work. I however decided to completely rewire my car with 14 gauge O2-free speaker cable, which made it harder and considerably more time consuming. I was rewarded with good sound, even from my factory, which greatly under powers them.

Running the new, larger 14 gauge speaker wire into the front doors was quite a feat, requires modification the the wiring connector/harness clipped into the body in order to do a professional install through the rubber "conduit".

I also decided to run the wiring that would be required for me to install an amp for them, to issue of an under powered radio. I ran wiring from the H.U. under the center console and under the carpeting on the "hump" and then under the rear seats to the trunk. Then for the front speakers, starting from the doors, i ran it all the way forward(or back depending on how you look at it) and connected the two sets (left on left, right on right) with wire nuts, as the amp will come later. I connected more cable to the rear channels and connected them to the rear speakers.

I have since installed a VR3 H.U. with a bit more power and it can get pretty loud, even though running only 16 watts per channel RMS when the speakers can handle 50 watts RMS.
