Ford Escort shift knob & boot installation
From Mechanical Database
Procedure
- Disassemble the console area, start off by unscrewing the stock shift knob, place it aside.
- Find the little tabs that plug into the side of the console that keep it all together, remove those.
- Move your front seats all they way forward and remove the screws from each side of the console.
- Lift the rear portion of the console up and out and place it aside.
- Remove the two screws holding down the console.
- With the screws removed, pry each side of the console that wraps around the center column and lift up, making sure the ebrake handle is engaged as much as possible.
- With the shifter console removed, flip it over and remove the 4 bolts holding in the stock boot.
- Replace the console parts in reverse order (shifter console first then the back console).
- With everything back together you should be left with a bare shifter with no boot. Place the new boot over and make it look nice.
- Find the sleeve for proper shifter diameter, place the new knob over it and secure it with the alan key and the screws, screw the base on the knob and you're finished.
