The following was written from performing an aftermarket tachometer installation in a 91 2nd gen Ford Escort.

Procedure

EDIS module
  1. Find a place to mount the tachometer and make sure the wires will reach where you are going to connect them.
  2. Run the green wire through the fire wall. One suitable place is the plate where the clutch pedal goes (if the vehicle is an automatic). The location should preferably be on the driver side.
  3. Wire the black to a ground under the dash. One possible location is just above the fuse block. Theres a bolt there that is grounded.
  4. Wire the red wire to a SWITCHED power wire.
  5. Hook up the white wire to dash lights.
  6. For cars 91-93 that did not have a tachometer to begin with:
    1. Pull out the EDIS (ignition control module) next to the fuse block in the engine bay.
    2. Disconnect the wire plug from the EDIS.
    3. Look at the wires going into the plug. There should be one missing second from the left. That's the one where you have to run your green wire. You can either crimp a female prong that goes to that pin or you can strip off abotu 2 inches of the green wire cover and put that into the hole where the pin goes.
    4. Plug the EDIS back in.
    5. Start the car and make sure everything works. if not, then the green wire is not getting a good connection and you will have to try reinserting it.
  7. For cars with tachometers:
    1. Cut or splice into the wire and run your green wire to that, The color of the tachometer signal wire is yellow with a dark blue stripe.
