Ford Escort 2nd gen push button ignition

The following describes how to install a push button ignition switch in a 2nd gen Ford Escort, it was performed on a white Escort GT.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Remove the vinyl cover around the steering wheel. It should be held on by three screws.
  3. Locate the ignition switch and use the volt meter to find the neutral safety wire, it should be black with a blue stripe.

  4. Cut the wire about 2 in from the switch. Strip the insulation and connect new 16 ga wire, with enough length to reach the new ignition switch (push button or flip) location.

  5. Connect to the switch and the wires properly making sure they cannot touch any metal, to avoid potential shorts.
  6. Tuck the wires in and reassemble everything.
