Dodge Neon spark plug replacement

To change the spark plugs a 3/8 in ratchet will be required, a 5-6 in extension, and a spark plug socket. Preferrably with the protective rubber inner-boot to avoid chipping or cracking the insulator, this also helps retain the spark in the socket during removal.

  1. First gap the new plugs.
    • Stick the .035 wire between the electrodes and run it through. It should slide through the gap with little resistance, if any. There should be no room(or like a 1/2 a hair's width) between the gapper and the electrodes.
    • If you have to adjust the gap, use a small screw driver or a small hammer and gently tap the electrode until the gap is .035.
  2. Remove spark plug wires from plugs (pinch-twist-pull).
  3. Remove old spark plugs
    • Put socket on extension, put extension on ratchet, put ratchet in spark plug hole, over spark plug, and remove. You may have to flip a little switch or twist a small knob at the top of the ratchet to reverse it.
  4. Take new plugs and put a thin coat of anti-sieze on the threads.
  5. Put the plug in socket, reverse ratchet to clockwise mode. GENTLY screw in the plug.
    • If anything feels stiff or binds, do not force it! The Neon head is aluminum and forcing the plug can lead to cross-threading. If it binds, remove the plug, check the threads for obstructions and try again.
  6. Once you have the plug hand-tight, re-install ratchet and tighten to about 20 ft-lbs or just give it a good 1/2 to 3/4 turn but don't apply excessive pressure as this will strip the thread and require removing the entire cylinder head to repair.
  7. Repeat the above for all the plugs.
  8. Smear some dielectric grease on the inside of the spark plug cable boot that attaches to the plug. Install wire. Repeat.
