Dodge Neon camber adjustment

Adding crash bolts helps to adjust camber on the Neon for maximum corner power. This applies to the standard Neon and ACR, although the ACR provides more adjustment. There are 3 types of Chrysler bolts for the Neon to attach the struts to the front steering knuckle.

Standard bolt: Fully threaded. No adjustment with standard suspension. Limited adjustment with slotted ACR struts.

Crash bolt: Threaded only part way, so allows slop where the strut and knuckle meet. One or two can be used per side. One is recommended for the standard suspension, and two for the ACR.

Camber bolt: Fully threaded, but with an offset head, allowing easier fine adjustments when used with the ACR's slotted (lower bolt only) struts. Only one per side should be used in the ACR.

Installation Procedure

The camber adjusting crash bolts are relatively easy to install. The toe angle will have to be reset after installation. A 200 ft lb torque wrench is required for the proper torque settings during installation.

  1. Jack up one side in front and support the car with a jack stand, then remove the wheel.
  2. Remove and replace one bolt at a time. They go in from front to rear, with the nut being on the rear side. Just put the nuts on finger tight at first until both upper and lower bolts are in.
  3. Put a drop of threadlock on the threads before tightening. The threads should be cleaned if dirty.
  4. When both bolts are in and just slightly tight, get a helper to pull out the bottom of the knuckle while pushing in on the top and hold it like this while you tighten up the nuts. This will provide maximum negative camber.
  5. Torque the nuts to 150-175 ft-lbs. The maximum of 175 ft lbs is recommended because sometimes the bolts tightened to 150 ft lbs will slip during racing use.
  6. Repeat for the other side.
  7. Adjust the toe angle.
    • Learning to do your own toe adjustments is recommended. It can be accomplished with just hand tools such a trammel bar that can be obtained for less than $ 100. If the vehicle is taken to a shop for alignment, be sure to specify that only toe alignment is desired, and not to change anything else. Also request a report of what the camber values are. If the camber is at it's maximum settting on each side, the sides shouldn't differ by a significant amount.
    • Negative camber may cause uneven tread wear and decrease the tread life of the tires. If the vehicle is going to undertake any long trips, putting the original bolts back in and resetting the toe angle would be a good idea to reduce tread wear.
