Band exhaust clamp

The vehicle does not require to be lifted for a muffler install. Only one tool and physical strength are required.

  1. Make sure the vehicle is unmovable, either by engaging the emergency break or putting the car in park or first gear.
  2. Lay on the ground behind the Neon, orient primary hand (left or right) on the driver side
  3. Loosen a single 15mm bolt on neon muffler clamp. Do not remove the bolt, the clamp is a part of the muffler and does not come off.
  4. Pull off the rubber hanger (no bolts/screws) on the passenger side of the muffler. You can pry this off and pull on the muffler to help, there is plenty of play, pulling these hangars requires practice, and persistence.
  5. Pull off the rubber hanger on the driver side of the muffler.
  6. Work the muffler loose.
  7. reverse above to install new muffler
  8. Note, new clamp is conventional type and has two nuts. Do not over tighten, otherwise future removal may require cutting the pipe.

Other suggestions: I would recommend a band type clamp from napa. Its a perfect seal and will not damage pipe. Walker also makes this style clamp and can be bought at rockauto.com for about the same price. I will never buy a cheap muffler clamp again. These are great and can be reused.
