While installing a new head gasket, the decision was made to install a new exhaust manifold supplied with the HG gasket / seals kit. Surprisingly the original setup did not have an exhaust manifold gasket. Rather the bare bare cast iron manifold was bolted directly to the alloy head. This doesn't seem normal when due to the specification of a head gasket in the Chrysler shop manual, and since it's also included in the kit.

This is because non-export, non-TLEV SOHC motors do not use exhaust manifold gaskets while the DOHC motors do. This explains why the SOHC upper gasket kits are shipped without them. The effected model years are 1995-1999. The DOHC upper gasket kits include exhaust manifold gaskets and they were also used in production.
