Dodge Neon DOHC oil restrictor

From Mechanical Database

Jump to: navigation, search

In a Dodge Neon, under hard use (over 6000 rpm), the DOHC engine generates enough vacuum to inhale oil through the PCV. The oil restrictor is a small insert that goes in the return air line that comes out of the driver's side of the valve cover. The restrictor limits the amount of airflow and prevents oil from entering the air intake system. The symptom that indicates this problem is smoking through the exhaust, particularly following a long, high-RPM, right-hand turn. This problem was described in TSB #09-07-95, which specifically mentions ACRs. However, any hard-driven DOHC should have this piece installed.

Installation procedure

This piece (p/n 4856291) is available over the parts counter for about $4.00.

  1. Open hood and locate the PVC tube that comes from the drivers side of the header.
  2. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to open the clasp that cinches the rubber tubing to the metal one.
  3. Gently remove the rubber tube.
  4. Place the restrictor into the metal tube, it should click into place. Avoid using excessive pressure which could damage the metal tube.
  5. Re-assembly is the same in reverse order.
